2009 Bolivia Election – at the Bolivarian Games Ceremony

On Saturday, November 14, 2009 I managed to snag a temporary press pass to the opening ceremony of the 2009 Bolivarian Games where I figured Evo Morales would be making an appearance. I was mostly interested in getting some pictures of Evo and seeing what the chuquisaqueño reaction to him was. It was not good.

Bolivia Elections 2009 – Sucre 2

Yesterday I went out to the Mercado Campesino to see what the people there thought. I suspected it might be a little different from the city center since a lot of what Morales advocates might be more popular with the campesinos than the urban people. I was wrong though, all of the market vendors I talked to didn’t like Evo for one reason or another.

Bolivia Elections 2009 – Sucre

I’ve moved from Potosí to Sucre, and the culture has changed quite a bit too. Potosí seemed to be a relatively safe bet for Morales, but Sucre is definitely another matter. What I have found talking to people so far is that the question most people consider is not who to vote for of all the candidates, but whether they are for or against Morales.

Bolivia Election Kickoff

I am currently in Potosí, where René Joaquino is the mayor and also a candidate for the presidency. As you would expect, he seems to have a fair amount of support around here, but there is also a lot of support for MAS and Morales, which may go to show that Joaquino’s position is relatively weak.

Natural Bridge Fall Colors

One of the coolest places in Kentucky is the Red River Gorge, an area of sandstone carved out by the Red River and various small tributaries. It’s known among rock climbers as one of the best climbing spots in the country and it also has great hiking trails and plenty of local color. If you can’t get there this fall to see the leaves changing colors, enjoy this shot from the Skylift that goes to the top of the bridge at Natural Bridge State Park.

Bound for Bolivia

I’ve been in Lexington, Kentucky for the last week and will be here through next Wednesday, but after that I am taking off for a couple months in South America. On the 21st I take an overnight flight to Santiago, Chile where I’ll spend a couple days. Hopefully those will be mostly standing up since after that I’m on the 20 hour bus through the Atacama Desert up to Calama.

Goodbye Weehawken

For the last five years I’ve lived in Weehawken, New Jersey, a small town across the Hudson River from Manhattan. It’s a pretty quiet place, most of the people there commute to the city for work each day. When I decided to leave Weehawken, I realized I didn’t have many photos of the town itself, so I spent some time photographing the places and things that bring back to mind my experience of living here.

A Pilot’s Life for Me

You may not have heard of a harbor pilot, but there is one on just about every ship that passes under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. They are responsible for getting an inbound or outbound ship safely through New York Harbor.

Harbor Pilots Preview

I spent about half of Wednesday with the Sandy Hook Pilots, a company that supplies pilots to bring a ship from the open ocean into port. I’ll have much more soon, but here’s a shot to tide you guys over until I can get everything processed and online.
